SaveFrom vs FileShot: Which Video Downloader Still Works?
— Written by Brendan, Founder of FileShot.io
SaveFrom.net is one of the most visited video downloaders in the world, with an estimated 110 to 150 million visits a month. If you are in the United States, though, it greets you with a letter instead of a download box: SaveFrom announced it stopped serving the US on April 28, 2020, and its English page still shows that notice to US visitors. FileShot works in the US and everywhere else, on more sites, with no install.

How SaveFrom works
SaveFrom does not publish how it reads links. An independent 2026 test by AppsCyborg counted about 40 supported platforms and noted prompts to install SaveFrom’s browser helper.
How FileShot reads a link
FileShot does not rely on one method. When you paste a link, a server-side chain of five extraction engines takes turns until one returns the real file: yt-dlp with rotating client profiles and browser impersonation, Cobalt, a real headless Chromium browser that plays the page and captures the stream, an HTML media sniffer, and Nextractor, FileShot’s own extractor for players the open-source tools miss. FileShot also remembers which engine won on each site and tries it first next time. In a live sample on October 4, 2026, about 1 in 5 successful downloads came from an engine other than yt-dlp — links a one-engine downloader would have failed.
Why people switch to FileShot
- It works in the US, where SaveFrom does not.
- Five extraction engines on every link instead of one method.
- 1,000+ supported sites in one box, plus a server-side browser for players no site list covers.
- Nothing to install, on desktop or phone, and no account.
- After the download, turn the file into an encrypted FileShot share link with optional expiry instead of re-uploading it somewhere else.
What US visitors get from SaveFrom
Open SaveFrom.net from a US connection and the paste box is replaced by a statement that SaveFrom ended its United States service on April 28, 2020. The page itself loads fine, so it is easy to mistake for a glitch. It is not one: clearing cookies, changing browsers or switching from phone to laptop gives the same notice, because the decision is based on where the connection comes from.
About 40 sites against 1,000+
An independent 2026 test by AppsCyborg counted about 40 platforms that SaveFrom handles. A link from any other site returns nothing useful. FileShot covers 1,000+ sites, and for players that no site list covers, its headless browser engine opens the page, plays the video and captures the stream the player requests. In practice that means the news clip, the course preview or the niche video host you paste next has a real chance of working.
Nothing to install
The same 2026 test noted prompts to install SaveFrom’s browser helper. FileShot never asks you to install anything to get a file. It does offer an optional extension for Chrome, Firefox and Edge, but every download works from the website alone, including on a phone.
Moving from SaveFrom to FileShot
- Copy the same video link you would have pasted into SaveFrom.
- Paste it into FileShot’s downloader.
- Pick a format. Formats marked “Video + Audio” arrive as one file with sound, up to 4K on Pro.
- Press Download. For many links, Pro analyzes up to 100 at once.
Formats you get
FileShot offers MP4, WEBM and audio-only downloads. YouTube and Facebook store HD video and audio separately; FileShot merges them before you download and marks those formats “Video + Audio,” so an HD file never arrives silent. On Pro, quality goes up to 4K when the source has it.
Using FileShot from the US
FileShot works from the United States with no VPN and no workaround. Paste the link the same way from any country, on a computer or a phone, and the file downloads directly.
Which one to use
If you are in the US, SaveFrom is not an option. Anywhere else, FileShot covers far more sites, tries five methods on every link, and lets you share the result privately.
