Apple Ecosystem vs. Open Platform
iCloud is deeply integrated into Apple's ecosystem. If you own an iPhone, Mac, and iPad, iCloud Drive syncs files seamlessly across all your devices. But that's also its limitation: iCloud is built for Apple users. Windows support is minimal, Android support doesn't exist, and Linux users are completely excluded.
FileShot works in any modern browser on any operating system. No app installation required, no account needed. Share an encrypted file link with anyone — they open it in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, or iOS.
Encryption: Opt-In vs. Always-On
iCloud introduced Advanced Data Protection (ADP) in late 2022, which enables end-to-end encryption for iCloud Drive. However, ADP is opt-in, requires all devices on your account to be updated, and disables iCloud web access for encrypted data. Without ADP enabled, Apple holds the encryption keys and can access your files (and comply with law enforcement requests).
FileShot's zero-knowledge encryption is always active. Every file is encrypted with AES-256-GCM in your browser before it leaves your device. The decryption key is embedded in the URL fragment and never reaches the server. No opt-in needed, no device requirements, no trade-offs.
Storage and Sharing
iCloud's 5 GB free tier is shared across all Apple services — photos, device backups, documents, and files all compete for the same space. FileShot's free tier provides 50 GB of storage (10 GB per file) dedicated entirely to file sharing, with unlimited storage on paid plans.
iCloud is designed for permanent file storage and device sync. FileShot is designed for file sharing with auto-expiration (1 day to unlimited), which is better for data minimization and compliance scenarios.
