When Should You Scan a File?
Any time you receive a file from an untrusted source — whether it arrives via email, messaging apps, or a download link — scanning it before opening is a smart precaution. Certain file types are higher risk than others: executable files (.exe, .msi), scripts (.bat, .ps1, .js), and macro-enabled documents (.docm, .xlsm) are the most common vectors for malware delivery.
How Our Scanner Detects Threats
FileShot uses ClamAV, an open-source antivirus engine maintained by Cisco's Talos Intelligence team. Our virus definition database is updated daily and contains millions of malware signatures covering trojans, ransomware, worms, adware, and phishing payloads. When you upload a file, it is scanned against this entire database in seconds and the results are returned immediately.
After the scan completes, the file is permanently deleted from our servers — we do not retain any copies. For files that pass the scan, you can proceed to share them through FileShot with confidence that they are clean.
How FileShot Virus Scanning Works
Our virus scanner uses ClamAV, the leading open-source antivirus engine trusted by millions of servers worldwide. When you upload a file for scanning, it is checked against a comprehensive database of malware signatures covering viruses, trojans, worms, ransomware, spyware, and other malicious software. The scanner processes files locally whenever possible and provides instant results with detailed threat information including the specific malware family detected, severity level, and recommended actions for quarantine or removal.
