SnapInsta vs FileShot: Instagram Reels Compared
— Written by Brendan, Founder of FileShot.io
SnapInsta is a long-standing Instagram downloader, and it handles Instagram only. In a six-tool Reels test published in 2026, NewZnav reported that some SnapInsta downloads carried watermarks and that carousel handling was inconsistent. FileShot saves public Reels without adding a watermark and works across 1,000+ sites.
Quick comparison
| Feature | SnapInsta | FileShot |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram Reels | Yes | Yes |
| Watermark-free | Some watermarks reported (NewZnav 2026) | No watermark added |
| Other platforms | No — Instagram only | 1,000+ sites |
| Extraction methods | Instagram-only | Five engines in a fallback chain |
| Encrypted share link | No | Yes |
How SnapInsta works
SnapInsta reads public Instagram links with a single Instagram-specific method.
How FileShot reads a link
FileShot does not rely on one method. When you paste a link, a server-side chain of five extraction engines takes turns until one returns the real file: yt-dlp with rotating client profiles and browser impersonation, Cobalt, a real headless Chromium browser that plays the page and captures the stream, an HTML media sniffer, and Nextractor, FileShot’s own extractor for players the open-source tools miss. FileShot also remembers which engine won on each site and tries it first next time. In a live sample on October 4, 2026, about 1 in 5 successful downloads came from an engine other than yt-dlp — links a one-engine downloader would have failed.
Why people switch to FileShot
- Clean files, with no surprise watermark.
- Five extraction engines on every link instead of one method.
- 1,000+ supported sites in one box, plus a server-side browser for players no site list covers.
- Nothing to install, on desktop or phone, and no account.
- After the download, turn the file into an encrypted FileShot share link with optional expiry instead of re-uploading it somewhere else.
Instagram’s own Download button
Instagram offers a Download option on some public Reels, but only when the creator has left downloads on, and the saved file carries the Instagram logo and the creator’s handle. Reels with licensed music can save without their sound. That is why people still use third-party downloaders: they want the clean file the player streams.
Why a clean file matters
A watermark stamped into a Reel cannot be removed without cropping or blurring part of the picture. That matters when you want to cut the clip into an edit, keep it in an archive, or send it on without someone else’s branding over it. FileShot saves the stream the Instagram player uses and adds no watermark of its own, so the file is the clip as it played.
No login, ever
Neither tool needs your Instagram password, and no legitimate downloader does. Private accounts are shown only to approved followers, so no tool can reach them. Any site that asks for your Instagram login to “unlock” private posts is a risk to your account.
When Instagram changes
Instagram changes how its pages load media often. An Instagram-only tool with one method stops when that method breaks. FileShot runs five engines in turn, including a headless browser that plays the Reel the way your phone does, and remembers which engine works on Instagram so the next download starts with it.
How to download a Reel with FileShot
- Tap the paper-plane icon on the Reel, then Copy link.
- Paste it into FileShot’s downloader.
- Choose MP4 or audio and download. Formats marked “Video + Audio” include the sound.
Saving a Reel’s audio
Choose the audio option to keep only a Reel’s sound, for a song snippet or a voiceover. If Instagram muted licensed music in the Reel, the sound is not in the stream, so no tool can recover it.
Your own Reels
For Reels you made, the cleanest copy is your original video or the edited Reel saved to your phone before publishing. Instagram’s Download button gives everyone, including the creator, the branded version once the Reel is live.
Many links at once
SnapInsta handles one Instagram link at a time. FileShot Pro takes up to 100 links at once, from Instagram and any other supported site in the same list.
Private accounts
Reels and posts from private Instagram accounts are only visible to people the owner allows. No downloader can read them without that access, and a site that claims it can is a reason to close the tab. Public Reels download normally.
Which one to use
FileShot covers Instagram and everything else without the watermark risk.
