Video Downloader Not Working? 6 Causes and Fixes
FileShot Team · 2026-10-04
Most failures come from one of six causes, and five of them have a fix.
A video downloader fails in a handful of recognizable ways: an error message, a spinner that never ends, a file with no sound, or a page that refuses to work in your country. Each symptom points to a cause. This guide lists the six causes, how to tell which one you hit, and the fix for each.
Match the symptom to the cause
| What you see | Most common cause |
|---|---|
| “Unsupported URL” or nothing happens | Cause 2: site not on the tool’s list |
| Worked last week, errors today | Cause 1: the site changed |
| File downloads but is silent | Cause 3: split audio and video |
| A notice instead of the paste box | Cause 4: blocked in your country |
| “Limit reached” or a paywall after a few downloads | Cause 5: daily limit |
| Every tool fails on the same link | Cause 6: private, deleted or DRM |
1. The site changed and the downloader did not
Platforms change their pages and APIs often. Single-method downloaders break until someone updates them. How to tell: the same tool worked on the same site recently, and now fails on every link from that site. Fix: use a downloader with several engines. FileShot runs five in turn, so when one breaks, the next one takes over.
2. The site is not on the downloader’s list
Many downloaders support a fixed list, about 21 services for Cobalt and about 40 for SaveFrom in a 2026 test. How to tell: the tool works on YouTube or TikTok but not on the site you need. Fix: use a downloader that also captures streams with a real browser. FileShot’s headless Chromium engine reads players that no list covers, and FileShot covers 1,000+ sites in total.
3. The video is split into separate audio and video
You get a file, but it has no sound. How to tell: the file plays, the picture is fine, and VLC’s Codec Information lists no audio stream. Fix: see Downloaded video has no sound? FileShot merges both automatically, and its quality menu marks those formats “Video + Audio.”
4. The downloader is blocked in your country
SaveFrom has shown US visitors a service-ended notice since 2020. How to tell: the site loads but shows a statement instead of a paste box. Fix: use a service that serves your region. FileShot works in the US. SaveFrom not working in the US has the details.
5. You hit a daily limit
Some tools cap free use, for example Video Downloader Plus at 3 downloads a day, and SnapWC notes daily limits. How to tell: the first downloads worked and later ones ask you to wait or pay. Fix: FileShot has no daily download count.
6. The video is private, deleted or DRM-protected
No downloader can get these, and that is the one case with no fix. How to tell: the video does not play for you when you are logged out, it shows “unavailable,” or it is on a paid streaming service. Those services protect streams with DRM, and no tool decodes them.
Problems on your side of the screen
- Pop-up blocker or ad blocker: some download pages open the file in a new tab. If nothing happens, check the blocked-pop-up icon in the address bar.
- Browser blocked the file: check your browser’s downloads list for a blocked or paused item.
- Wrong link: a profile, channel or playlist link is not one video. Copy the link to the video itself.
- Storage full: on phones, a long 4K video needs real space. Free some up and retry.
Platform notes
- YouTube: age-restricted and members-only videos require a signed-in account, so a server cannot fetch them.
- Instagram: Reels from private accounts are shown only to approved followers and cannot be downloaded.
- Facebook: videos in private groups or shared with friends only are out of reach. Copy the video link, not the profile link.
- TikTok: photo posts are still images with music, not videos.
Quick test
Before you try a series of unknown sites, check the video itself: open the link in a private browser window, logged out. If it does not play there, no downloader will reach it. If it plays, the problem is the tool.
Paste the link into FileShot. If five engines cannot read it, the video is almost certainly private, deleted or protected at the source. If FileShot reads it, the problem was the tool you were using, not the video.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my downloader stop working on YouTube?
YouTube changes often, and single-method tools break until they are updated. A downloader with several engines keeps working when one breaks.
Why does it say unsupported URL?
The site is not on the tool’s extractor list, or the link is not a single video. Try the direct video link in a downloader that also uses a real browser.
Can any tool download Netflix or other paid streaming?
No. Paid streaming services protect video with DRM, and no downloader can save those streams.
