Downloaded Video Has No Sound? How to Fix It

FileShot Team · 2026-10-04

Silent downloads come from split streams, not your speakers.

You download a video, open it, and there is no sound. Your speakers are fine. In almost every case the file has no audio track at all. This guide shows how to confirm that in ten seconds, the four causes of a silent download, how to fix a file you already have, and how to avoid the problem next time.

Check whether the file has an audio track

  • VLC: open the file, then Tools, then Codec Information. If only a video stream is listed, the file has no audio.
  • Windows: right-click the file, Properties, Details. An empty Audio section means no audio track.
  • Mac: open the file in QuickTime Player, then Window, then Show Movie Inspector, and look for an audio format line.

If there is an audio track and you still hear nothing, skip to cause 3.

Cause 1: the platform split video and audio

YouTube, Facebook, Reddit and other big platforms store HD video and audio as two separate streams. On YouTube, nearly every format above 360p works this way. Your browser plays both together. A downloader that saves only the video stream gives you a silent file. This is the cause of most silent downloads.

SnapWC’s own FAQ tells YouTube users that video and audio download separately and suggests merging them in another tool.

Platforms split the streams on purpose. With adaptive streaming, the player switches video quality up and down as your connection changes, while the audio keeps playing from its own stream. Storing one audio track instead of a copy inside every quality also saves the platform storage and bandwidth. The cost lands on downloaders: anything that saves only one stream gets half a video.

Cause 2: you saved the wrong format

Many tools list “video only” formats next to normal ones, often at the top because they have the highest resolution. Picking one gives a silent file even from a tool that can merge. Look for a format labeled with audio.

Cause 3: your player cannot decode the audio

Some files carry audio in a format an older player does not support, such as Opus audio inside a WEBM or MP4. The file has sound, but the player stays silent. Open it in VLC, which plays nearly every format. If it plays there, the file is fine and the player was the problem.

Cause 4: the original has no sound

Some clips are posted silent, and some platforms mute music the uploader did not license. Instagram’s own Reel download, for example, can drop licensed music. If the video is silent when you play it on the site, no downloader can add sound.

How to fix a silent file you already have

Download the audio stream too, then combine both in a video editor or with the free ffmpeg tool. With ffmpeg installed, this command joins them without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -i audio.m4a -c copy -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 output.mp4

If ffmpeg complains about the format, change the output name to output.mkv, which accepts almost any combination of video and audio. It works, but it is an extra download and an extra step every time.

How to avoid it

Use a downloader that merges the streams for you. FileShot fetches the video and the audio and merges them into one MP4 or WEBM with sound before you download. The quality menu reads “Video + Audio,” so you can see the file will have sound before you press Download. That holds up to 4K on Pro, and for links from 1,000+ sites.

Silent screen recordings

If you recorded the video from your screen instead of downloading it, silence usually means the recorder captured the picture but not the system sound. Many recorders need system audio switched on separately. Downloading the original from its link avoids the problem, because the file carries the platform’s own audio track.

Quick checklist

  1. Confirm the file has no audio track (VLC Codec Information).
  2. If it has audio, try VLC before anything else.
  3. If it has none, check whether the original plays with sound on the site.
  4. Re-download with a tool that merges audio, or merge the two streams with ffmpeg.

Frequently asked questions

Why does YouTube download without sound?

YouTube stores most HD formats as separate video and audio. A tool that saves only the video stream produces a silent file.

Can I add the sound back without downloading again?

Only if you also have the audio stream. Then ffmpeg or a video editor can merge them. Otherwise you need to download again with a tool that merges.

Does FileShot always include sound?

Formats marked “Video + Audio” are delivered as one file with sound, as long as the original has sound.
